Ylang-ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Indonesia, and parts of Polynesia. Its botanical name is Cananga odorata. The name “ylang-ylang” comes from the Tagalog word ilang-ilang, meaning “wilderness,” alluding to the tree’s natural habitat. Ylang-ylang is best known for its fragrant essential oil, extracted from its star-shaped yellow flowers via steam distillation.
