DescriptionThese are all reasonably well struck, reasonably centered, nice, clear specimens. I have lesser quality specimens at appropriate prices. Ask if interested.Mitchiner wrote in Oriental Coins and their Values, vol. 3, that Ajayaraja invaded Ujjain and founded the city of Ajmir.Sakambhari (Shakambhari) is in Rajasthan, in northwest central India. It’s current name is Sambhar Lake town. It is next to a salt lake. Jaipur is in the region. In medieval times the area was occupied by the Chauhan clan, of which the Chahamanas were a ruling branch. They ruled by dividing the inheritance among sons, so there got to be several Chahamana domains. The Sakambhari branch was dominant for about a century. The earliest ancient Indian coins were the “bent bar” punchmarked silvers of the Achaemenid Persians occupying Gandhara in northwest Pakistan. By the 3rd century BC coins were in general use in most of India and Ceylon, and in subsequent centuries struck round coins in gold, silver, and copper came into use throughout the subcontinent and beyond to Southeast Asia and Pacific islands to Java and beyond.
